President’s report – November 2014

Dear Friends and Residents,

Our Annual General Meeting will be on November 13, 2014 at the University Elementary School, 3035 Utah Dr NW, Calgary, AB T2N 3Z9.  It will go from 7:00-9:00 pm.  It was a busy year and we have a lot to share with the community; an agenda is attached.

Membership Drive 2015

Please take a moment and renew your community association Membership. If you join/renew for 2015, the rest of the 2014 membership will be free.  Membership helps the community in three ways:

-Advocacy

-Community Events and Celebration

-Communication and Development Updates

Membership allows the community association to inform, invite and involve the community.  We have tried to make it as easy as possible this year.  Membership is $20/year.  A membership form with a return envelope is included in this newsletter.  Registration and payment can also be done online.  You can also register at the AGM on November 13, 2014 starting at 6:30 pm.  Special thanks for the Foothills Mennonite Church for volunteering as a drop off location.

Sale of MR land and Right of Way along 16h Avenue

The City of Calgary is proposing to sell a small 0.34 Ha (0.83 acre) parcel of land along 16th Ave to be incorporated into the Stadium Shopping Centre development.  The matter went before Calgary Planning Commission on October 27, 2014 and will go before Council in early December.   Attached is a letter signed by six communities in NW Calgary who are opposed to the sale of the subject MR Land. In the next few days we expect additional communities along 16th Ave to also formally endorse the contents of this letter.

The six communities who signed the letter to the City believe 16th Avenue already has its challenges – particularly as the main access to southern Alberta’s largest medical campus – and that a full and robust review of the additional demands being placed on 16th Avenue be completed prior to any right of way dispositions on 16th Avenue.  This is not about being anti-development; we fully understand the new projects are bound to proceed. We are simply asking that the City prepare a major study similar to the Crowchild Trail master plan that identifies the projected demands on 16th Avenue and lays out a coherent plan to address the transportation infrastructure upgrades that may be required along 16th Avenue prior to the disposition the MR Land and consequent loss of right of way. Further meetings are scheduled and we will of course keep you updated as best we can. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Regards,

Peter Khu, President
