Crescent Heights High School Celebrates 100 Years

Crescent Heights High School is celebrating 100 years of excellence in 2015.  The school opened in 1915 in the current location of Balmoral School on 16th Avenue North West under the direction of William Aberhart who would go on to be Premier of Alberta.  Crescent Heights started as Crescent Heights Collegiate Institute until 1919 when it became Crescent Heights High School.  Construction of the current school building was completed in December of 1928 and the official opening was held on January 7, 1929;  the building being described as one of the most modern structures of its kind on the front page of the Calgary Herald.  There have been numerous additions and renovations of the building over the years and the current student population is close to 2000.

The history of Crescent includes numerous former students and teachers who have become well known for their achievements locally and worldwide.  Names such as William Aberhart, John Laurie and Bill McKnight are well known for their contributions to the history of Calgary and Alberta.  Others such as Ron and Marg Southern who have had  distinguished  careers in business and with Spruce Meadows Equestrian Center,  Ken Taylor whose exploits as a Canadian diplomat were documented in the movie “Argo”,  and Doug Mitchell a notable Calgary lawyer who went on from a CFL career to become league commissioner among his many accomplishments.  Currently there are several alumni of Crescent who are having success in the entertainment industry including country and western star Paul Brandt and the extremely popular duo of Tegan and Sara Quin.  These are only a few of the individuals who represent the success of Crescent Heights students. The Centennial of Crescent Heights High School will be celebrated on May 15 -17, 2015 with a reunion to be held at the School.  The weekend will begin on Friday night with registration, photos and refreshments and will continue Saturday with a Cowboy breakfast, afternoon barbeque and  “beef on a bun” dinner.  The official opening will be held Saturday night and will feature many invited guests followed by entertainment and a dance.  There will be a farewell coffee and doughnut brunch on Sunday morning where memory books and photos can be collected.  Memorabilia will also be available for purchase.   Details for the “entertainment and dining center” will be announced shortly.   Special events are planned for the weekend including a reunion of the Mixed Choirs of the Lloyd Erickson years which were well known for their performances at the Kiwanis Music Festivals and other musical events.  The tentative schedule of events is located on the Alumni Web-site at www.crescentheightsalumni.ca and includes registration forms and information about the event.
