Councillor Sutherland’s Monthly Update – June

Renaming of West Campus to University District

West Campus Development Trust is proposing to rename West Campus as the University District. Proposed street names are to be named after former University of Calgary chancellors, dating back to when the University was established in 1966. The naming concept was reviewed by The City of Calgary Planning Commission on May 7th and by again by City Council on July 20, 2015.

I hold the University District development as a model example of successful engagement with the five communities surrounding it. A higher standard of community input contributed directly to the rather unprecedented speed with which the Land Use Plan outline received approval from Council. The University District development encompasses a well-designed mixed-use strategy, and I look forward to working together with University District all the way through the development build out.

Fair Entry – Subsidized Programs, Services and Facilities

The City has several programs that are offered at a subsidized rate for Calgarians who have trouble affording them. A new Fair Entry process was created to make applying for fee-subsidized City services easier. Fair Entry means one application for the five subsidy programs.

1. Calgary Transit Low-Income Transit Pass Program

2. Recreation Fee Assistance Program

3. Property Tax Assistance Program

4. No Cost Spay/Neuter Program

5. Seniors Services Home Maintenance – Basic yard care, snow removal, house cleaning, painting and minor repairs for low-income seniors to help them live securely in their homes longer.
