Notice of Motion - Impact of proposed changes to Local Area Plan

A Notice of Motion was put forward by Councillor Chabot that will allow rowhouses and townhouses to be supported in Neighbourhood Local – Limited Scale areas (represented by yellow thatched area on map) on sites that have a rear lane and meet one of the following location criteria:

within a transit station area,
along or adjacent to an identified main street,
on a corner parcel, or
adjacent to a school, park, or open space.

The proposal does not take into account geographically small communities such as University Heights and effectively blankets our community with the ability to put a rowhouse or townhouse on any existing property with a rear lane.

The motion also made it an “inform only” process whereby no resident impacted has the ability to comment or speak EXCEPT at the Public Hearing of Council on November 9. This goes against the hard work of many volunteers putting in a lot of hours on our Local Area Plan, spanning 2 years of work and deliberation and consideration of the unique characteristics of each community within the Local Area Plan.

If approved by Council, these updates would be added to our Local Area Plan without any further consideration.
